The defects of Hofstadter’s paranoid style

From 1950 to 1954 the Cold War exacerbated resulting in persecution of alleged communists and socialists in the US. This period is referenced as McCarthyism. Senator McCarthy headed the infamous hearings conducted by the House Un-American Activities Committee, which compiled an index of one million suspects. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) under Director J. Edgar Hoover, who was one of the most fervent anti-communists, led the investigations.

The number imprisoned was in the hundreds, and some ten or twelve thousand lost their jobs. In the film industry, over 300 actors, authors and directors were denied work in the U.S. through the unofficial Hollywood blacklist. Charlie Chaplin was one of them. Blacklists were at work throughout the entertainment industry, in universities and schools at all levels, in the legal profession, and in many other fields.

 “Guilt by association was the watchword, as loyalty oaths, blacklists, registration requirements, and congressional inquiries sought to identify and penalize those who were sympathetic to or associated with the Communist Party, irrespective of their involvement in any otherwise illegal activity.” (David Cole, 2002, p. 997)

The focus on the flaws in the financial system may hide other causes of the crisis. The polarization in income distribution, in particular, tends to get glossed over as a potential cause of the crisis. Financial deregulation is only half of the story, the polarization of income distribution, thus the growth of inequality is another one; it is their interaction that provided the grounds for the crisis. 

Engelbert Stockhammer’s paper at RMF tells us in a nutshell the following:

“Neoliberalism has led to a shift in power relations between capital and labour. As a consequence income distribution has shifted sharply in favour of capital. Economically this has a dampening effect on domestic demand (as demand is wage led in the world as whole) which provides the background in front of which the macroeconomic imbalances that erupted in the present crisis have to be understood.”

Susceptibility for conspiracy theories

In a previous article I gave some definitions of conspiracy theories and reported about their pervasiveness, in this article I review some social-psychological papers on conspiracy ideation.

Lacking control in day tot day life causes fear

The desire to combat uncertainty and maintain control has long been considered a primary and fundamental motivating force in human life and one of the most important variables governing psychological well-being and physical health. For example learning details and training about a painful medical procedure can reduce anxiety and even lead to shorter recovery time.

In contrast, lacking control is an unsettling and aversive state, activating the amygdale, which indicates a fear response. It is not surprising, then, that individuals actively try to re-establish control when it disappears or is taken away.

Jennifer A. Whitson and Adam D. Galinsky show in their paper ‘Lacking Control Increases Illusory Pattern Perception’ that participants who lacked control were more likely to perceive a variety of illusory patterns, including seeing images in noise, forming illusory correlations in stock market information, perceiving conspiracies, and developing superstitions.

Claims that rich capitalists are no longer out to make a profit, but to create a one-world government go back many decades now and it is always said that it is really going to happen this time, but it never does.

Since these claims have proved wrong dozens of times by now, it makes more sense to assume that leaders act for their usual reasons, such as profit-seeking motives and institutionalized roles as elected officials. Of course they want to make as much money as they can and that can lead them to do many unsavoury things. Revolving door policy, demagogy, manipulation and corruption must be denounced, but not be buried in intangible myths and conspiracy legends.

Dorling refers to sociologist Zygmund Bauman for a refutation of conspiricism. Look here for a video of Zygmund Bauman explaining his view on conspiracy theories. Both claim that there is not and never has been conspiracy of the rich:

“There has not been any great, well-orchestrated conspiracy of the rich to support the endurance of inequality, just a few schools of free-market thought, a few think tanks preaching stories about how efficient free market mechanisms are, how we must allow the few ‘tall poppies’ to grow and suggesting that a minority of ‘wealth creators’ exist and it is they who somehow ‘create’ wealth.”

“That there is no great conspiracy was first realised in the aftermath of the First World War, when it became clear that no one ‘… planned for this sort of an abattoir, for a mutual massacre four years long’ (Bauman 2008: 6). The men they called the ‘donkeys’, the generals, planned for a short, sharp, war.”

The functioning  if the INADs centre 127ter in Steenokkerzeel,   replacing 127bis is detailed in  Charlotte Lebbe Masterthesis: “De terugkeer van de grenzen. Een biopolitieke blik op Fort Europa”. It was rewarded with the ‘Karel Verleye Price’ but is kept out of the public eye.

Her research is one of the rare scientific inquiries into the practices of the guards of the affluent society. The architect who drew the originals of the new centre and delivered them to Charlotte Lebbe for scanning required her to sign a contract before allowing her to scan the plans. This contract mentioned  that the copies of the plans could not be published  under any circumstances. Why is it hidden?

Inadmissible refugees, when stopped at the border, are incarcerated in the new centre close to the airport of Zaventem, on international enclave territory,  even before they can request asylum. So they never enter Europe in a legal sense and can be returned without notice.

But also those that succeed to enter Europe are mostly refused asylum. Only 21,4% of asylumseekers were granted shelter in Belgium in 2010, the remaining all receive a command to leave the territory? They are hidden for the public  in 127ter before they are forced on an airplane for deportation .

The new building is structured like a panopticon. The Panopticon is a type of prison building designed by English philosopher and social theorist Jeremy Bentham in 1785. The concept of the design is to allow an observer to observe (-opticon) all (pan-) prisoners without the incarcerated being able to tell whether they are being watched, thereby conveying what one architect has called the “sentiment of an invisible omniscience (source: Wikipedia).

In her thesis Charlotte points plenty of times to Didier Bigo, who pictures the whole situation as a Ban-opticon,  guarding watching and making invisible those that are banned while remaining invisible as guards. The idea is also that one can be inhumane as long as nobody notices it.

Facebook gezichtsherkenning

 

Google lanceerde dit weekend ‘Find my Face’, een systeem voor gezichtsherkenning. De toepassing zal optioneel zijn, preciseert Google, dat op die manier de kritiek hoopt te counteren die rivaal Facebook over zich heen kreeg bij de lancering van een gelijkaardig systeem begin dit jaar. ‘Frictionless’, met ander woorden zonder de Facebook zijn gebruikers daarvan op de hoogte te stelde. Zowel Facebook als Google+ gebruiken nu sofware voor gezichtsherkening.

Gelijke ruil via peer to peer netwerken

In ons economisch systeem is ongelijke ruil een overheersend paradigma:
(1) op het vlak van de productie, door de ongelijke evolutie van koopkracht en productiviteit zoals Marx opmerkte.
(2) op het vlak van het verstrekken van de finananciële middelen, een analyse van Bernard Lietaer.
(3) op internationaal vlak tusssen het Zuiden en het Noorden zoals blijkt uit het werk van Samir Amin.
(4) op het vlak van de natuur nl. wat we eruit halen en wat we er aan terug geven.  Zoals  verschillende hedendaagse critici besluiten: Serge Latouche, Tim Jacson, Herman Daly

Via internet vind men steeds meer oplossingen die gebaseerd zijn op een gelijke ruil zoals collaborative consumption en complementary currencies. Ze gaan uit van een gelijke ruil.

Bevrijd jezelf van de Facebook inkijk zonder Facebook te verlaten

Reclame is des te meer doeltreffend als ze bij de juiste persoon terecht komt, de juiste doelgroep. Dus liefst enkel bij die mensen die geïnteresseerd zouden kunnen zijn in het product of dienst dat een bedrijf aanbiedt. Anders is reclame storend.

Selectieve aanbieding is dus veel effectiever. Facebook kan die selectie maken op basis van een analyse van onze profielen en die van onze vrienden. Als we in onze profielen dingen aanbrengen die een fout beeld geven, dan is Fcebook er niets mee en verkoopt het fake info aan zijn klanten. Met als gevolg dat het ook niet zal werken voor die klanten, marketeers van bedrijven. Dus minder clicks op de adds en minder inkomsten voor Facebook.

Een advies van Unsell Yourself — A Protest Model Against Facebook, maak dat jouw profiel niet langer bruikbaar is om te verkopen aan marketeers door het een beetje bij te tunen:

“Hou al je Facebook contacten, de mogelijkheid om berichten te versturen of te chatten of op je wall te posten en toepassingen – met uitzondering van op gedrag gebaseerde advertenties, het eten en drinken van Facebook’s dollar inkomsten en wat hen de troetel van  Wall Street maakt — je kan dat allemaal killen door bijvoorbeeld  “Teen Vogue” toe te voegen aan  jouw. Of Teletubbies. Of Tiffany’s.”

Jouw echte vrienden weten genoeg over jou, het is niet nodig dat je dat nog eens op Facebook aan de hele wereld te grabbel gooit. Voor professionele contacten gebruik je toch best Linkedin. Of wordt lid van Diaspora.

Het cyber-industriëel complex

Overal bewakingscamera’s, Google street view, … er is geen plekje nog veilig voor gluurders en pottenkijkers. Het Internet is waarschijnlijk het meest bespiede terrein van allemaal. Het valt niet op, een cookie droppen, niemand die het merkt maar het gebeurt continu.

Einde de jaren tachtig zagen hackers en ngo’s het internet als nog goedkope manier om informatie snel te verspreiden.  Democratisering van de informatiestromen. Goedkoop wel, maar nu is er een ander probleem. Ook al zijn alle rekeningen betaald, het is alsof er voortdurend een deurwaarder geflankeerd door twee dienders onze internet-huiskamer binnenstormt om de inboedel te inventariseren.

Waarom doen ze het? Machtswellust? Voyeurisme, of simpelweg omdat het kan…  Op het net kan iedereen het woord nemen. Democratie van het woord. En dat was niet de bedoeling. Dus moet het gajes in de gaten gehouden worden. De legitimiteit van het regime zou wel eens in vraag kunnen gesteld worden.

Voorstel basiswaarden beweging

1. Geen geweld enkel al een legitiem antwoord op repressieve aanvallen
2. Volksvergaderingen met maximale publieke deelname. De methode om consensus te bereiken als beslissing mechanisme.
3. Samenwerking en synergie, wederzijdse hulp. Dialoog om conflicten op te lossen.
4. Collectieve intelligentie, debat en het delen van kennis aanmoedigen
5. Horizontaal systeem. Geen hiërarchie en het ontbreken van permanent leiderschap, naast natuurlijk leiderschap, roterend en terugroepbaar op elk gebied.
6. Het aan de kaak stellen en verwijderen van de huidige debtocratie.
7. Organisatorische transparantie. Het ware als gedeelde doelstelling.
8. Milieuactiviste, duurzaamheid en consuminderen.
9. Onpartijdigheid en het huidige systeem van vertegenwoordiging wegdoen.
10. Anti-kapitalisme. De misbruiken van het huidig systeem liggen aan de basis van onze reactie.
11. Vermenselijking van de economie, prioriteit geven aan het gemeenschappelijke goed, gebaseerd op zorg voor elkaar en de wereld
12. Zelfbeheer. De kapitalistische slavenarbeid uit het systeem.
13. Seculiere spiritualiteit. Geen enkele religieuze regel kan invloed hebben op de beweging.
14. Gezondheid- en opvoeding systeem voor de groei van gezonde mensen, het allopathische drug systeem verlaten, en op de massa georiënteerde educatie aangepast aan toekomstig werk.
15. Inclusie van elk individu of groep die deze waarden of ideologie respecteert.
16. Terugroepbaarheid en continue herziening van deze waarden.

Proposition basic values movement

1. No violence, except as a legitimate response to repressive attacks.
2. Assemblies with maximum public participation. The consensus as a method of decision-making.
3. Cooperation and synergies, mutual aid. Dialogue to resolve conflicts.
4. Collective intelligence, encouraging debate and knowledge sharing.
5. horizontal system. No hierarchies and lack of permanent leadership, besides organic leadership, rotating and revocable in any specific area.
6. Impeachment of actual debtocracy.
7. Organizational transparency. The truth as a shared aim.
8. Environmentalism, protecting resources, decrease in consumption, and sustainability
9. Non partisanship, discarding the current system of political representation
10. Anti capitalism. The abuses of capitalism have caused our reaction
11. Humanized economy, giving priority to the common good, based on caring for each other and the world.
12. Self management. Capitalist slave-labor out of the system.
13. Secular spirituality. Any religious rule can not have any influence in the movement.
14. Health and educational systems for the growth of healthy people, leaving the allopathic drug system, and mass-oriented education to fit future work.
15. Inclusivity of every individual or group who respects these values ideology??

Ook modaal gezin getroffen door saneringsmaatregelen

De begroting treft niet alleen de pas afgestudeerden en de gepensioneerden in spe, ook het modaal gezin zal jaarlijks 550 euro extra ophoesten. Thomas Miels en Ann Van Den Broeck berekenden het in De Morgen van 3 december. Ze gaan uit van en gezin met twee jonge kinderen. Dimi is onderwijzer Barbara is vertegenwoordigster in de automobielsector.

- Er komen nieuwe plafonds voor belastingaftrek: +226,48 euro
- Bedrijfswagen wordt duurder: + 312 euro
- Betaaltelevisie: +12 euro

Bovendien loopt het gezin dat een verbouwing gepland had voor 3.000 euro mis omdat energiebesparende investeringen niet langer aftrekbaar zijn.

Bedrijven daarentegen blijven genieten van gunstige belastingtarieven. Onlangs berekende de PVDA nog dat de 3000 meest winstgevende Belgische bedrijven slechts belast werden tegen een tarief van 5,73 procent.

Digitaal activisme is anders

Ook al vind je op Internet dezelfde ongelijkheid terug als in de reële wereld, dit is geen reden om het Internet niet te gebruiken in de strijd voor ontvoogding, integendeel.

Internet is het goedkoopste kanaal om informatie te verspreiden. Het kan omgevormd worden tot een kanaal langs waar mensen met elkaar kunnen samenwerken ook al bevinden ze zich in de fysische wereld mijlenver van elkaar.

Een andere dynamiek

Internet  is het een ideaal middel om acties over het gehele land, zelfs over de hele wereld te synchroniseren.

Maar het klassieke hiërarchische, broadcast model is zeer kwetsbaar, neem de zender weg en je kanaal ligt plat. Many to many netwerken zijn veel moeilijker uit te schakelen.

Liberty Park kan overal zijn

Toen de bezetters van Zuccotti Park – alias Liberty Square – in de donkerte van de nacht van 15 november uiteengedreven werden en als opdringerige journalisten door de flikken aan de kant geschoven, werd pijnlijk duidelijk dat Michael Bloomberg niet alleen hun burgemeester was, maar waarschijnlijk ook de meest gekende “1%-er” van New York en omstreken.

Daags nadien hield de burgemeester een persconferentie: “Het Eerste Amendement beschermt het spreekrecht. Het geeft geen vrijgeleide om een publieke plaats in te palmen met tenten en slaapzakken.” De burgemeester had eerder al verklaard: “New York is de stad om naartoe te komen en jezelf uit te drukken. Wat er gebeurde in Zuccotti Park was iets anders.” De protesteerders, ging hij verder, hadden het park ingepalmd, “zodat het voor niemand anders nog beschikbaar was.” Ik veronderstel dat elke manifestatie de bezette ruimte “onbeschikbaar voor iemand anders” maakt. En “jezelf uit te drukken”, is anders ook niet wat in het Eerste Amendement staat.

Sociale netwerksites zijn niet sociaal

(1) Het onderhouden van relaties via Internet  gaat te nadele van face to face contacten. Sociale interactie via face to face  is niet alleen aangenamer en vollediger,face to face is is ook gezonder. Facebook bvb stimuleert narcisme.
